Make a quick £60 on your gas bills now

There is a new energy efficiency tip that can help you unlock around £60. It involves turning down the flow temperature on your condensing combi boiler. To be clear, this is not turning down your thermostat. It can help you save 6-8% on your gas bill (worth around £40-£50 on your annual bill, plus around £10 on our Paid to Save programme). Whilst the savings are based on annual usage, we all know that the bulk of our gas usage happens over winter. So the time is right to implement this energy efficiency tip and unlock your cash benefit.

The full details are available at our friends at the The Heating Hub, but here is a quick lowdown:

Step 1 - You need to have a condensing combi boiler. And safety warning, do not try this yourself if you have a hot water cylinder (check out The Heating Hub’s advice on these), nor if you have a health condition where you need to be more careful about maintaining room temperatures.

Step 2 - On the front of your condensing combi boiler, there should be two dials: one for heating (usually with a little radiator icon over it) and one for hot water (with a little tap icon). This is not your room thermostat, but instead sets the flow temperature for the boiler. NB some boilers have a digital display next to the dial, some have an up and down button, some just have vague markings so its not actually possible to know what temperature you have lowered it to. Turn this dial down - how low you can turn your flow temperature down will depend on the size of your radiators and how much energy you use to heat your home. You may need a bit of trial and error to find the right level for you. But because most radiators are bigger than they need to be (as the industry has sized based on guesswork or used basic online calculators that almost always overcompensate), you should be able to lower this without impacting your comfort.

You may find more info in your boiler manual and of course more info at The Heating Hub.
