Why net zero, not green

There has been a lot reported about “greenwash” in the energy market…. This report from Good Energy and Scottish Power, in conjunction with Baringa, is a great example here.
It calls on Ofgem to update regulation for how green tariffs can be marketed and verified. We hope that Ofgem do just that. But whilst “green energy” remains somewhat of a mess… we wanted to give the public a very easy way to choose to switch to net zero energy without risking getting it “wrong”, having nothing to base their decisions on than, at best, confusing information. Particularly, customers who are price conscious.
This was the first reason to choose to launch a net zero product, rather than a green tariff filter.
Secondly, we didn’t think enough suppliers were currently making the right product choices. We felt that customers should be able to choose net zero energy without any price premium and to be given the evidence for it, in accordance with international accountancy standards. So that led to us deciding to do the net zero bit, rather than someone else. We are a company that values accurate data. So having it to drive our comparison and switching service meant we could consider what else we could do with it, that could create additional value for people. And so net zero energy was born!
Thirdly, we believe in climate change and meaningful action. It blew our mind when we learnt that energy forms 73% of the world’s carbon footprint. So if we were each to take a single action to address the number one environmental issue, it would have to be to make energy net zero. Unfortunately, it’s not realistic to have an energy system that is powered 100% by renewables, given it is weather dependent and our homes and businesses need lights and heating regardless of whether the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. So whilst it’s great to go 100% renewable, it won’t be possible for everyone to do that. We need people to collectively choose a combination of technologies so that the whole country can be supported to be net zero, not just a proportion.
You can support this vision with a 60 second sign up to our service. It’s free and we can keep you on net zero energy automatically for life or for as long as you want it. You have options on what this looks like - create your bespoke service today by checking out our switching preferences.
